Well, the time had come for Bug to get her haircut! She was soooooo excited! She wanted it just like Pie's haircut, short and cute. I got out the comb and spray bottle and scissors and sat her on the counter. Her anticipation was growing and growing with each comb and spray. I thought she was going to pop before I could even get it cut.
Then I cut the first swath off and placed it on the counter next to her. (We kept Pie's hair from her first haircut and I was going to make a pile of Bug's first haircut to save as well.) She looked down at it and a she calmed down a little bit. With the next cut, she calmed down a little more. Soon her excitement was totally gone... soon she was crying... saying things like, "I don't want a shortcut anymore" and "I want long hair again".... Well, my sweetie, it's a little late.
I kept cutting and kept telling her how cute it was going to be and how much she would love it! Soon Pie and Roo were over wondering what was going on. They were so excited for her, knowing how long she had begged for her hair to be cut. They kept telling her it was looking so cute. She just kept crying and watching the pile of her lovely golden locks grow bigger and bigger.
Finally it was finished and the best haircut I have given a 3 year old! I was so proud of myself!
We had completely traded places. I had all the excitement and giggles she started with and she had all the fears I started with, and then some tears on top of that.
I took her to the bathroom to look in the mirror. She was crying and I was trying to comfort her, telling her it was so cute and it would grow long again soon. She looked in the mirror and cried a little more. Then she looked again and said, "Hey, I look like a big mommy, now! I like my shortcut!"
For the next week she was telling everyone she saw the story of her shortcut, her sadness, her happiness and how she looks like a big mommy. It really is cute. I'm glad she finally came around to that realization.
